Grading Philosophy
At the W.C.V. middle school, we expect high quality work and effort from our students and believe in the philosophy that if the classroom expectations are set high, then a student will raise their effort to meet those expectations. Lowering expectations in the classroom only moves academic achievement one way - lower.
Assessments vs. Assignments
Assessments are used to determine how well the curricular content that is taught in the classroom has actually been mastered by the student. Assignments are a part of the repetitive process (daily work, classroom work, homework, group work) used to assist the student in gaining the knowledge of the curriculum that is assessed. Assessments will always weight heavier on a student's grade than assignments.
Late Assignments
Assignments that are late will be allowed to be completed prior to the assessment over the content for 50% of their possible point value.
Missing Assignments
Any assignment that is missing after the assessment is completed over the content covered will receive no credit (0 points).
Extra Credit
Extra credit points are only given to students who are designated through research as needing additional accommodations to be successful in the regular education classroom (students with Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.)).
Planners
Planners will be checked off for completion every other day through our Life Skills classes (as part of the curriculum for the class - organizational skills). A student who completes their planner appropriately over the course of the term will be recognized at our Positive Behavior Supports Assemblies.
